      The History of Krankenhaus Waldfriede

      • 2017

         

        The health network of the Waldfriede hospital has now become the most diverse medical and nursing care provider in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. In addition to the Waldfriede hospital, the social station and the PrimaVita health center with its swimming pool, the Academy of Health and Nursing, the Nikolassee Private Hospital, the Waldfriede Hospital, the Desert Flower Center, the Seniorenhaus Waldfriede and, in the future, an outpatient day clinic to the network . This means that the Waldfriede Network is one of the largest employers in the district.

        On January 1, 2017, the "Seniorenzentrum Arche" is taken over in Adolfstraße in Berlin-Zehlendorf. In future, it will be part of the ever-evolving health network of Waldfriede Hospital under the name "Seniorenhaus Waldfriede".

        The Internal Medicine's endoscopy unit is completely modernized. 

        On September 11, Krankenhaus Waldfriede, along with Waris Dirie from the "Desert Flower Foundation" inaugurates the "Desert Flower Center" Waldfriede. The center provides unique holistic care for women and girls who have undergone genital mutilation.

        The "Medical Check Up"program is started. Self-pay patients can now make use of a comprehensive preventive health examination. It takes about five hours to complete. 

        The reconstruction of the existing surgical unit and the " emergency services" is completed. The two new operating rooms are outfitted with state-of-the-art technology.

        In order to strengthen its international relationships, Krankenhaus Waldfriede (the first hospital in Berlin to do so), finalizes a collaboration agreement with the Florida Hospital Group in Orlando, Florida ( USA ) . This includes cooperation in the medical, nursing and administrative sector. 

        Krankenhaus Waldfriede, with its " Interdisciplinary Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery " becomes a European training center for surgical techniques in Coloproctology. Doctors from Germany and abroad take part in courses and seminars offered here. 

        For the first time, the hospital conducts the "International Coloproctology Congress" which will be held every two years in the future. 

        Krankenhaus Waldfriede acquires the swimming pool located next to the John F. Kennedy School in the Zehlendorf district. All swimming lessons and hydrotherapy applications can now be carried out as part of the preventive health course program in its own indoor swimming pool. 

        The short-term care facility at the Botanical Garden in Berlin-Steglitz, with its 14 beds and approximately 270 guests per year, is taken over by Krankenhaus Waldfriede.

        In September, in cooperation with the Adventist Welfare work, a daycare center for 65 children and a multi-generational house is opened.

        The "Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery" is founded and is soon recognized as one of Germany's leading treatment centers for diseases of the colon and rectum.

        Krankenhaus Waldfriede is one of eight recognized breast cancer centers in Berlin, receiving a DMP insurance contract.

        Krankenhaus Waldfriede is KTQ certified for the first time.

        Krankenhaus Waldfriede is recognized as a smoke-free hospital .

        The health promotion center " PrimaVita " is expanding its form and content, as well as its staff and partners. 
        The broad spectrum of preventive medical courses and seminars, on such topics as exercise, nutrition, weight management, general lifestyle, etc. is offered by physicians, nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists and volunteers. 

      • 2000

        Krankenhaus Waldfriede is the first hospital worldwide, to provide a baby hatch and comprehensive consultation and a support concept for mothers in distress. 
        As of 2013, 20 babies have been placed anonymously in the baby hatch and about 200 anonymous births have been conducted. Here, the hospital chaplains are providing an invaluable and beneficial humane work.

        The Service Provider Krankenhaus Waldfriede (SKW) is established. 
        The SKW provides economic and utility services for the hospital. It provides catering services for the patients and staff; is responsible for janitorial and transportation services, as well as bedding . The service provider also supplies nursing homes, schools and day care centers in the district. 

      • 1997

        On April 1, Krankenhaus Waldfriede's Short-term Care is established. It is the first in Berlin to be associated with an acute care hospital . Today the short-term nursing station in Waldfriede contains 14 beds. 300 guests are served annually.

        The health promotion center " PrimaVita ", with its structured prevention program and location on hospital grounds, becomes the first to be established in Germany.

        On October 1, the Social Service Department Waldfriede is founded. It is the first Social Services Department associated with an acute care hospital in Germany. Today, 64 employees work in the department and It treats about 160 outpatients daily. 

      • 1986

        Then follows the establishment of a voluntary care service. Volunteers are still helping patients today. The service spectrum extends from admission services to accompanying patients to the wards. 

      • 1984

        Long before the legislative authorities thought of it, Krankenhaus Waldfriede begins the first health seminars. 

      • 1983

        Extensive renovations and repairs begin.

        Another extension is added.

        Im August, an inauguration ceremony for the building of a new extension is celebrated. 

      • 1940 - 1945

        Of the 310 air raids over Berlin during the Second World Ware, miraculously, none of the buildings of Krankenhaus Waldfriede are damaged. 

      • 1933

        From the end of January, new laws and regulations are introduced by the totalitarian NSDAP dictatorship which significantly effects the hospital’s daily routine. 

      • 1931

        A new economical slump occurs. 

      • 1923

        During inflation, significant limitations are experienced, but with the introduction of the German rentenmark and the economical recovery during the 20’s, a profit is made which is used for new investments. 

      • 1922

        Donations, as well as its own funds enable an extension to be built. In July, Krankenhaus Waldfriede receives state-approved recognition, as well as permission to open a nursing school. 

      • 1920

        On April 15, Krankenhaus Waldfriede, with 39 beds, 27 rooms and a not quite completed OR room, is ceremoniously inaugurated.

        In the Fall, Dr. L.E. Conradi, buys a suitable building in the present-day district of Zehlendorf, and begins to set up a hospital.

        The protestant denomination of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Germany (public body), recognized the necessity of providing help for the sick and needy, and decided to open a hospital. It was to be modelled after the American hospital built in 1886 in Battle Creek, Michigan, by the Adventist, J.H. Kellogg.
