FGM. This abbreviation stands for “female genital mutilation” – a gruesome, yet widely practiced ritual.
Every 11 seconds, a girl is mutilated by the so-called ritual of female genital mutilation. 8,000 little girls share this fate every day. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 150 million women are mutilated worldwide.
FGM does not only occur in the countries of Africa. Even in Germany, about 50,000 victims live with FGM.
Those affected are severely traumatised. The horrors they have gone through deeply impact the rest of their lives. Inflammations in the genital area, incontinence, fistula problems, the resulting societal isolation, an unbearable feeling of shame or even death are not infrequently the consequences of FGM.
Since September 2013, women living with FGM can find medical treatment and psychosocial care at Krankenhaus Waldfriede. We would like to inform you about our service spectrum.
